According to a new study current climate models don’t account for nearly enough carbon being released by arctic thaw. Organic materials are stored much deeper in permafrost than they are in ordinary soil. So the permafrost contains significantly larger amounts of both CO2 and methane than is accounted for in current models. This means is the current models don’t have a big enough sensitivity number to account for the additional positive feedback.
