Star Trek sucks.

Watch Babylon 5. (first four seasons only)

My post was intended in a similar tongue-in-cheek nature, not intended to start a real flame war.

I did love the first four seasons of B5 though. I thought it was a more gritty and realistic (though still hopeful) portrayal of humanity's future.

I think there is no science fiction franchise that goes even 1% of the way towards depicting believeably how contact with plausible alien intelligence is likely to play out.

Well Chuck, it's really impossible to comment unless it actually happens. I love sci-fi because they (generally) at least keep their ideas within the realms of possibility, and who really knows? There might be a Darth Vader out there somewhere.

Well, given that the universe is 13 billion years old, and our technological civilization is only a few hundred years old, the odds of any alien we meet being within a few decades of us in terms of technological development is vanishingly small. It's overwhelming more likely that they are either quite primitive (somewhat less likely), or as far more advanced than we are as we are compare to the earthworm (somewhat more likely). There is almost no possibility of meaningful conversation much less bonhamie between humans and aliens.

Well, there have been some great anime films that might have it right. You were talking about the need for more tentacles and raping right? That is probably how our first meeting with alien intelligences will probably go.
