I think that sometimes, especially in the case of food, we are either so far removed from some issue in either distance or time that it fails to come across as serious as it actually is. Even more mystifyingly, in the case of this particular subject, I've heard people say "well, that doesn't happen anymore" - no, it doesn't - because we pasteurize our fucking milk.......

:beats head against a wall:

Obviously not leveled at anyone here, just venting.

LOL, in the case of raw milk Min, the cat food is most often more expensive than the people food. "The Poor" aint downing Bubba's Super Fresh Raw Milk - they're on WIC, getting the good shit. Speaking of, we used to peddle some of that catfood (and other luxury goods) at a market stand that helped to foot the bill of some water conservation research- the customers regularly remarked about how healthy my table must be (as a producer of their trendy goods) - I always got a kick out of reminding them that they didn't pay me enough to be able to afford to eat the shit that I grew, or the shit that I clubbed for them.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Has nothing to do with pasteurization but still worth mentioning in this context:

Quote:The 2008 Chinese milk scandal was a food safety incident in the People's Republic of China, involving milk and infant formula, and other food materials and components, adulterated with melamine.
By November 2008, China reported an estimated 300,000 victims,[1] with six infants dying from kidney stones and other kidney damage, and an estimated 54,000 babies being hospitalised.[2][3] The chemical appeared to have been added to milk to cause it to appear to have a higher protein content. In a separate incident four years before, watered-down milk had resulted in 13 infant deaths from malnutrition.

If we agree that parents shouldn't be allowed to choose faith healing over FDA and AMA approved medical treatment, then they shouldn't be allowed to chose non FDA approved milk.

When you are 18 years old, you have the right to chose for yourself what you want to do to your body and yourself. People should not have the "right" to chose things that carry an active risk of fatal or severe infection for their children. We make clear instructions on medicines and you're not supposed to dose your kid. If caught doing so, you will be prosecuted. The same should be said for things like that - feed your kid raw milk, prosecute for irresponsible parenting.

There's absolutely nothing in raw milk that would outweigh the cost benefit of pasteurized milk. These people are fucking retarded, and children shouldn't have to pay the price of parents wanting to live in the stone age rather than the 21st century. We say the same all the time about kids being raised by religious wackos and their out-of-date scientific principles. Why not this too?
I would agree with prosecuting people who give their kids raw milk and then the kid gets sick, but that's not going to prevent people from buying and giving their kids raw milk. I guess there's a little Darwinist in me that says let them do what they want, they're taking their own risks and will suffer the consequences, natural selection. I agree it's unfair to subject helpless kids and possibly jeopardize their lives... But I also think its impossible to stop parents who are convinced raw milk is the way to go from giving it to their kids. I'm generally a live and let live person... But there's something to possible mass public infections, in which case public health trumps individual desires. Maybe it should just be banned... Thinking
We vax against fucking chicken pox, could you imagine the mass hysteria if there were some mutant small/cow pox outbreak, which could happen with this raw milk craze...

Sampling bias. Those cultures that leveraged cattle (or other milk producers) heavily have a very widespread distribution of the mutation in question. If you don't have it, don't drink it - really simple.

Which is great, south of Atlanta, in the summer, at noon (if you're light skinned, not elderly, and healthy). Anywhere else that aint gonna cut it. We fortified milk with D because we identified a serious absence of it;s presence - and this was back when people spent alot of time outside. So no dice. By the by, that fortification process is what gives milk, for me, it;s pleasant taste. I fucking hated drinking milk straight from the udder - even after it'd been separated. Tastes like creamy urine.

Not to mention Rickets is really not a good thing to develop...

One can only hope that he is offering himself up for the experiment of dying from tuberculosis, small pox and gastro-enteritis. Dunno

Wow, you sound bitter.

The idea that the kind of moderate sun exposure that will get our body's internal vitamin D production going is already harmfull all things considered is really not uncontroversial:

I'll trust a walk in the sun and spending time in the half-shade much more than any kind of concentrated vitamin pill. But I guess we all take our chances.

Hmm endie?

I live in Australia mate... even spending time in half shade will give you sun cancer here. 5 mins in the sun here in summer is enough. Woe betide if you have to work outside.

Of course you are welcome to come here for an experiment

Vitamin D production is not a simple effect of light falling upon your skin. Perhaps you'll reread your link at notice the part where D levels were unaffected in both groups - now read back a few pages to the part where I explained why that is so.

"Trusting" in the sun to do something that it does not do...is strange, to say the least. Do you think that a giant ball of gas is something that needs to be trusted...or is in the business of doing something for your benefit that deserves trust? If you're in an area, at a time, and meet the biological requirements that are involved in the production of D from UV, 10 minutes in the sun will do (and then some). If you are not, take the pill, drink the milk....do whatever.
