Racism, Sexism, Homophobia.

Hmm. Coupled with his comments in the other thread im not sure. Maybe it's seen as a cultural norm where he or you are from but I don't see that as what it is where I'm from.

Tone is somewhat sarcastic - it's a generalized observation of what seems to be the prevalent attitude here in America. (I did read right that you're in England, correct?)

We've had people fighting for civil rights (read that as 'racial rights') here since the 60's. One could say that women were fighting for their rights here since the 20's by gaining the right to vote, but it's really been out in the open since the 70's with the rise of feminism.

Unfortunately, LGBT fights are more recent and haven't had the time to really sink into the public psyche, and there's that dratted "no homosexuals" clause in religion that makes it an even more uphill battle.

Therefore, in observation, we see it as 'society' saying "not okay to be racist" (because people have been fighting against it the longest), and (I don't think) it's "semi-ok" to be sexist, I think culture just provides too many stereotypes that are so pervasive people don't even notice it, and it's still "ok" to be homophobic - but only because of the massive number of people who cite their religion as a reason/excuse to feel that way.

Thank you. It is a generalized observation of general attitudes.

I got ya, peach. Once I figured out what your tone was, it was much easier to figure out where you were coming from.

And being a relative newcomer here I was hesitant to suggest it, but I think it bears reminding everybody - especially considering current events - that we're WRITING to each other. How you write something is not necessarily how someone is going to READ it. I'm not trying to be an ass about it, but I personally think a lot of the drama this place has experienced all of a sudden could have been avoided if people had taken just a moment to sit back and read...and reread...and reread the post that had been made before responding. And reread your responses before sending. A second or third reading sometimes makes all the difference. There are a lot of people here with great senses of humor and incredible intelligences, which is why I took up Shell's suggestion that I join. However, some of that humor gets lost in translation when we approach a post already up in arms. Take a breath first.

"It's totally not ok to be racist. It's semi-ok to be a sexist. And for the most part, being homophobic is the norm."

Mind boggling.

That boggles your mind.... when immediately after it Syna said, "It's not right in any sort. It all stinks."

If this somehow still confuses you, to paraphrase: 'It is not okay in any sense to be racist, sexist, or homophobic: it's all bad.'

I don't agree with him of course, but I can at the least respect that opinion. I can see at least very valid reasoning for the first two, though one should always remember that exceptions exist. Homophobia is a phobia like any others... and while experiencing such is very much not fun: it could on occasion save one from something very bad by their POV. More likely, i think, to paralyze you when you need to run... but definitely possible.

To be fair, there are also lines against women doing such things as wearing men's clothing (clothing is clothing much?)... so they had an uphill battle there. More important perhaps, is the fact that women are about 50% of the population... and LBGT something less.

No of course not.

You can tell some racist jokes once in a while and make your wife do all the house cleaning.
And then go out and beat some poor homosexual to death.

None of those actions are equal. Equality is decided from person to person.
