Christians/good people

RE: Christians/good people
One day i will have a kid too.I will lie to my kid that there is a God and that Catholics are right.Oh course he will ask me questions like "Then who is the mother of God?" "Why don't he come and meet me?",i wouldn't think that he/she is a genius to ask me that, anybody with half a brain can form questions like that.Of course i will make dumb excuses to that just like how my mother told me.I will lie to him in the most believable way,if he figures out that i'm wrong - then he is better off being an atheist because then i'll know he is a critical thinker. If he doesn't doubt me one bit and goes along with whatever i say, then he is not a critical thinker and is better off being a Christian,of course i will again lie to him/her that some of the things in the bible are lies that Satan wrote to mislead humans, just so that he/she doesn't turn into a complete biblical maniac.

Lol, yeah I saw that too. Only the mods can see who cast that vote, though.

That person is certainly entitled to their opinion, of course. But it makes me sad to know that there are so many "Christians" out there who are not putting forth a good example of Christ's love, and thus making other people see us as not being good people.

Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

So let's say, if a person considers themselves devout and practicing, then you can take it to mean as much for the poll question.

Well then that's a bit pointless to be honest, because that covers such a large group of people it would be insane to claim that none of them are moral or honest. I mean, if someone's passionate about their beliefs, that says (mostly) nothing about their moral code. I would however argue that most diehard fundamentalist christians are quite immoral.

Quote:Also, I honestly did not mean for the question to be loaded, and am not sure what is making it come off that way to you. In what other way could I have asked the question so that it would not be loaded?

Something like 'does (passionate/devout) christianity affect a person's morality (in a negative way)?' would be a bit better. The issue here is that it's making blanket statements about a group of people. You can't answer C without being an asshole. It's mostly the phrasing of the answer.

Pool, would you still consider it lying if what I teach my kid is stuff that I honestly believe to be 100% true? If so, this kinda contradicts your statement that Christians can be good people. If you see us all as liars, I don't see how you can see any of us as being good.

I know you didn't ask me, but it's different telling your kids what you believe and why; and teaching things uncritically as fact. That's the difference between sharing ideas and indoctrination.

I am extremely opposed to indoctrination, and I would certainly think it immoral of anyone to do it. That goes for any kind of indoctrination, it doesn't have to be religious. Of course there are some things very young children have to accept for their own good such as "ovens are hot and will hurt you", but this is not indoctrination, it's postponing the valid explanation until later where harm may come about in the mean time. If it's something you can't convince balanced adults is even vaguely true, it's not something that should be presented as fact.

I think it's very important to teach your children how to think, not what to think.

This is my opinion only, and comes with a 12 month guarantee of workmanship.

Well that's a different question entirely though lol. I already asked a very similar question in this poll: http://atheistforums.org/thread-34450.html

You are correct that the question covers a large blanket of people, but that is what I wanted to know. I'm glad to see only 1 person answered C.

No,that would not be lying. It would be misleading(in this case).
If a person lie that doesn't necessarily make them bad. Then everyone would be bad Smile lol

I agree with you 100%, brother!

Not really. And you've made it nearly impossible to vote C, so that's the result. But I won't drag this out. Nevermind.
