I know!  And I can't wait to get a giant slurpy cup and action figures.

Well at least we know they won't ever do another Star Wars Holiday Special!

Completely incorrect.

It's JJ Abram's bastardization of George Lucas' bastardization of Lord of the Rings.
  • Both universes are imbued with some arcane magical force
  • ATATs instead of Oliphaunts
  • A couple of droids representing normal people instead of hobbits, and both do remarkable things in the struggle ahead
  • The hero lives with their uncle
  • The hero then meets with up an old man with unnatural powers, Obiwan / Gandalf
  • Clear cut fight of Good vs Evil
  • Evil has a vast army of nameless minions that you don't have to worry about killing and who aren't very good fighters
  • The evil Lord has a single weapon of immense power that should not be fully activated
  • Whereas the hero receives a special light emitting sword from their mentor
  • A lonely hero almost single handedly blows up the enemy's stronghold

You're both wrong. Arthur, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars are all bastardizations of the Hero's Journey. Lucas was a huge fan of Joseph Campbell's work, and one of the last big interviews of Campbell was conducted by Bill Moyers on Skywalker Ranch. It's an interesting transcription to read in book form, or to watch as a series of shows, called "The Power of Myth."

They're not bastardizations of the Hero's Journey, they are all stories told using the framework of the Hero's Journey. If they were a bastardization of it, the Hero's Journey would have to have been its own story at one point, and it has never been. The Hero's Journey is the armature upon which the sculpture is created.

Never heard of the Hero's Journey before. Just looking at it I can see that it's a well-used formula.

They way I look at it is that it can't go farther downhill after the prequels. That was George Lucas officially taking a shit on the franchise, so I feel like there's no room for further disappointment. It will either be pleasantly surprising or meet the expectations set by the last three movies.

The new trailor made things look siutably beaten up. The prequels suffered by having a shiny, new and unconvincing looking universe.
