The CofE made an ad that would be illegal to show on TV, and "expected" cinemas to show it despite being directly opposed to the companies policy.

Yeah, let's also have 60 seconds of every other religion in the world before the film.
They should have stopped at, "We don't accept religious or political advertising". Whether or not it offends people is irrelevant. Annoyed at the sense of entitlement to special treatment is more accurate.
In other news, the rapid decline of Christianity in England will soon make the name The Church of England an exceptionally accurate description.

It's not been "banned". If you owned a cinema, you could decide to show it if you wanted to.

Not really. They're just so used to special pleading that it comes natural.
The CoE couldn't care less if the advertiser showed it and later the cinema refused another religious ad from the "competition" or even a cult and got sued...
Christianity didn't survive 2000 years by compromising .. Playing fair is not in their operating manual.

HOW? Nobody's telling these people they can't pray. Nobody's even telling them they can't pray in a cinema. You want to pray in front of the new 'Star Wars' film, fine. Go to the cinema and pray your empty little head off (just do it silently).
Fuxxake, a privately held company electing to not run your privately produced advert is NOT an impingement of your freedom of speech. If CofE wins this idiotic lawsuit, then I shall print up a series of posters extolling the virtues of atheism and demand that one be placed outside every fucking Anglican church on the planet. If they refuse, I shall file suit claiming repression of free speech.

I agree. If they win this, I'll be hugely pissed off and I shall probably write to my MP.
Do people really need reminding about Christianity? And if they "don't know much about it", how's a 60 second propaganda section going to change that? If anything, it's going to turn people off it if it was allowed to be shown. They have probably been done a favour.

Heh, great point. I can't imagine a cinema jammed with Star Wars fans on opening day, all of them seeing the advert and thinking, 'Christianity, huh? I should give that a wee Google when I get home...'

It contravenes OFCOM regulations regarding religious advertising on TV, though an audio version would have been acceptable for radio broadcast. Cinemas have discretion which seems to have been the angle the CofE was aiming at but given that it directly contravenes company policy I don't see how they've got a case. I doubt individual franchises would contradict corporate policy on this one.
