Am I the only one who doesn't want to be called a "Skeptic"?

Hey, at least you're not septic.
OP, what word would you prefer?
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Although if I have to call my by a title/label, then it'd be Christian apostate agnostic atheist which is a mouthful, but "atheist" fits me just fine.
Why wouldn't you fit?

Skeptic, to me at least, seems more like a philosophical worldview where you examine evidence and beliefs critically, from everyone - I just don't do that. Fair enough
Sure, I refer to it as being someone who requires good reasons and evidence before being confident in their beliefs. Of course, anyone can call themselves a sceptic and it doesn't mean they actually are. No one is perfectly rational either. I'd say the litmus test would be to go through your beliefs, and see if you could reasonably demonstrate them to some random reasonable person to be probably true. If you can't, you're probably not a sceptic. Which is fine, of course! It's not a contest Feel free to send me a private message.

I'd be happy to be called or call myself sceptic or skeptic or Skeptiker, the problem is that most people I meet are unfamiliar with the ideas of the modern science based skeptic movement and look puzzled or amused when I use the term. It just doesn't ring a bell for most people. When I told my family that there is a section of the skeptics club in our city they laughed because they couldn't tell from the name what they do, and would say something like "what, do they like meet and then be unsure about things together???"
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

I doubt that. I'm not convinced you do. |
