Formal logic for Dummies?

So, since coming to AF I have taken an interest in formal logic, and logical fallacies.  I've been perusing the web for fallacy practice quizzes, and logic 101-type crash courses, but I was wondering if you well-trained whizzes might have some recommended resources for a lay person of average intelligence like me!

It's very unlikely that, given the thoughts you've expressed in your posts, that you're just average in intelligence. I suspect most members here would be at least above average (IQ-wise).

Thank you! I think you are giving me more credit than I deserve, but very kind of you to say. [emoji14]

It's meant to be a gentle introduction with a few common examples of each fallacy/shitty technique. I need to add a few more on there, but I've got most of the ones you see all the time.

That's great, Rob! Thank you, I will take a look!

You're very welcome! Please feel free to give feedback or ask if anything is unclear. You'll be amazed at how the same fallacies crop up in every single theological argument...

I've found people who are doubtful of their intelligence tend to me more intelligent than they think. Those that are super confident about it are generally a lot less intelligent than they think.

Do I need to spell it out?

Yes, it's true! He really is our resident in prophet!

Lol, my new argument against Christians goes as follows:

"My Stimbo can kick your Jesus's ASS!"

An awesome resource, especially each of the linked articles in the list at the bottom:

Don't worry, my friend.  If this be the end, then so shall it be.

This reminds me a bit of a quote from Mr. C. Darwin that I like:

"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."

You're site is great by the way. I like appreciate that you provide short explanations to go along with each example, because some of the fallacies seem similar at first glance. The thing that drives me nuts about them is that many have two or three different names! Damn memorization tactics...5 years out of college and they still follow me! [emoji14]

Camus: Thank you! I'm really pleased you found it helpful Smile

Yes, I wanted to help people easily identify fallacies from the examples, rather than the other way around. It is frustrating that they have lots of names! But people well versed will generally know what you mean by any of them. You'll start to remember them, I'm sure, once you spend more time with them.

If you want to learn about logical fallacies, start a thread with a "logical proof for God," and you'll have them all thrown at you in about 3 posts.
