So I think we can agree that if you label the thing we evolved from "monkeys", then we evolved from monkeys.
That doesn't appear to tell us much though.

That's kind of what I meant when I said that it's all just definitions. It happens all the time in science, whether it's granite, planets, emotions etc. You have the historical lay person definition and the scientific definition and the two get often confused when scientists and lay people communicate with one another.
It doesn't tell us anything about reality, it's just quarrelling about semantics.

Except that it's not -just- definitions. Those definitions refer to something demonstrable, other than themselves. Just because some pissant has nothing other than semantics to rely on, doesn't mean that the subject of disagreement is just semantics. It;s up to the arguers to define their use of the term either explicitly, or by context. If a person wants to talk evolution, genetics, ancestry, classification....they don't get to make up pet definitions and talk about them -as though- they were still talking about the former. That's equivocation. Bad science -and- bad logic.

Never said that it wasn't equivocation, bad science or bad logic. But the root cause is still a misuse of definitions.

Not to be overly pedantic, but I think it's more accurate to say that the root cause is ignorance, and misuse of definitions is a symptom of that.

Would also agree with that. My slant on it is that regardless of the cause, there's no interesting argument to be had.
Call it a wurzelegoop for all I care, it doesn't change my understanding of evolution.
But I suspect the theist is deliberately using equivocation to make the theory less sound less plausible. If so then that is intellectually dishonest and that's what he should be called out on. At the moment though he's the one controlling the debate by arguing about definitions.

Equivocation is the bread and butter of apologetics. Trying to run it without them is like trying to write a soap opera without characters overhearing things they're not supposed to.
It gets used so frequently that I honestly think some people aren't aware they are doing it. They are also really good at forgetting it after having it pointed out, or pretending not to understand. Maybe some people really can't understand.

I used to use it without realizing it. Then, I realized it and became an atheist.
