Becoming a priest for the money?
March 27, 2009 at 9:33 am
(This post was last modified: March 27, 2009 at 9:33 am by Giff.)
Would enyone concidering to become a priest just for the money and perhaps for the career oppertunities? Why not become a pope and get big mansion that is also apart of your own country!
Similar what my dad once said when he explained why he once concidered to become a priest. His reason was "it is a good job" but he isn't religious.
Have anyone here thought in the same crazy thoughts, or is my dad the only one, which is not specially religious, that think that working as priest is a good job?

I think there are probably many priests working within various churches that are not particularly religious ... obviously there's the evangelist type who is primarily a snake oil salesman (in it for the money), then there are those who do it because it gives them the opportunity to get close to vulnerable people (paedophiles and similar who might be religious or not) and then there are those who simply join because they see in the church a tremendously powerful tool to do good things. There are, I'm sure, others too.

I never really thought of that. But it would be crazy.
This makes me wonder about the priests that might actually be doing this.
I don't think I would ever do this though

Priests and nuns are the saddest people on the planet that have a choice.
A man is born to a virgin mother, lives, dies, comes alive again and then disappears into the clouds to become his Dad. How likely is that?

Perhaps not a Catholic priest, but maybe Greek Orthodox or Church of England/Episcopalian aka "Catholic lite"
The Greeks really look after their priests, they can marry and they get to wear really distinctive hats.
You don't have to be an atheist to be a C of E priest, but it seems to be an advantage. Pretty sure you must at least be an agnostic to be an archbishop,

There's good money in contract killing too, but you have to draw a line when it comes to personal morals.
I could never make a living knowingly deceiving people in such an influential way, but obviously my position isn't unanimous.

How about an escort? They earn great money apparently and are practically self-employed and tax free since they're generally paid in cash. Sure, you'd end up with a bunch of people you wouldn't want to be with, but it beats the celibacy of being a priest.

If I was an utter prick AND I could find it as a job AND the money and perhaps amusment (if I was a prick) was worth the very probable utter utter boredom...THEN perhaps.

Priests and nuns are the saddest people on the planet that have a choice. not all of them are "sad", you can't know what they do in their private life
Personally, it's not God I dislike, it's his fan club I can't stand.

I could' t agree more with Overmars you see in Romania the religious people have a say:
"Do what the priests say, not what they do" , I must say that I only met 2 priests who actually let the impression on me that they are "made for it" the rest well.....you can imagine, and form what I have heared from other people I'm not the only one who thinks that way, and I'm not talking about private life here.
