Most airlines have a special service taking care of minors between ca. 5-11 when travelling alone, it's a standard practise.

Yeah, and the mom paid JetBlue 100$ extra for just that. Money well spent, in my opinion. Still, as bad as that was for JetBlue, what kind of parent lets their 5 year-old fly from the Dominican Republic to New York with some stranger? There is no way in hell I would let my five year-old do that.

Back in the 70's our family did this. My egg donor put my sister and I on an airplane from Baltimore and we flew down to our grandparents in Florida. This wasn't anything new. I was five years old the first time I ever flew on an airplane and it wasn't until 7 years ago that I finally flew in a plane with the egg donor for the first time. Up to that point, anytime I've traveled by flight, it was either alone or with my sister who is only a few years older than me.
