Shouldn't the right to die be a human right?

What if.you're paralyzed? Quadriplegic?

"What if" -imagines the most stretched scenario possible-...and -still- you can elect to die. If all that's left oin the bed is your body, completely paralyzed, fed intravenously against your will (which, btw, is illegal) then you aren't there any more. They're pumping meat to make avoid consequences to the living. There simply isn't any law that keeps us alive. That beyond the power of law.

How does a person in a vegetative state elect to die?
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Quote:With that said, all 50 states had laws stating that assisted suicide is a felony. Currently there is no law against the act of committing suicide in the United States. In some cases though, suicide is considered “common law crime” unless the victim can be proven to have been of “unsound mind.”

How do they "elect" to do anything, how are they alive?

Okay, so you're just being pedantic. Gotcha.

Oh, I'm the one being pedantic, gee...my bad........lol. If somebody wants to keep pumping resources into me, in a vegatative, state, more power to them, it's only "me" in a legal sense, I'm beyond giving a shit. That's for them, not "me". I have no rights to care about in the first place, I don't even exist, in that scenario.

What we do with meat is not an issue of "rights" for the meat, it's not about the meat. It's about us, the living and non vegetative, how -we- can be leveraged. What's illegal for -us- to do, what "help" we can and can't offer.

Well, my dad was in a situation where he was conscious but unable to end his life as he wanted. I don't think the portrait is as monochromatic as you're painting it, myself.

I only say that because this whole conversation centers around just those types of situations. Of course anyone can get a gun ('Murrica) and make a mess.

But "Right to Die" conversations are most often about terminally sick people, normally with limited options. To say there's nothing a government can do when governments regularly do prevent people from ending their lives in a pain free, mess free, and dignified way is being a bit dense, IMO.

But I get what you're saying.

Does it?  Does it center around those situations?  How common are they, how many vegetative people are campaigning for their right to die? In any case, dignified? Like what, a nice calm candlelit party and then they blow their brains out? There is no dignity in death, there's nothing. Pain, what pain, you're dead? Mess, what mess, you're dead?

Point, my point, anyway, is that it's a non-issue that they keep us bickering about like it meant anything, so that they can get work done elsewhere - where it actually matters....where there really is dignity to be stolen, where actual messes are made, where there are still people to feel pain. Control, control.... control.

Unable or unwilling?  It's as monochromatic as mortality, and no amount of making it too personal to argue will change that. Human lives are tenuous.  If you're conscious, you can end it, if you aren't.......You aren't there anyway. Your father could have, but didn't. Not a judgement, a statement of fact.
