Besides, I don't think there is any "greater good" behind "we don't negotiate with terrorists", it's just another made up reason by someone that don't really give a fuck.

For myself, I say don't negotiate for my ass. I've lived a good life and am useless as a slave. Plus, I'm betting that I could goad them into killing me just to shut me the fuck up.

For a loved one, I'd have to consider the circumstances. For my son, yep, I'd scrape up the dough ... and arm up, too. Because someone's got to pick up the money sometime, and they would have a lot of useful information, I imagine.
