It means to be unable to be sure of what words mean.

There is such a thing as nuance in the English language, you know.   Just because a word has fifteen synonyms, that doesn't necessarily mean they are all equally appropriate within the context of your sentence.

Sometimes less is more. Then again, it's never a good idea to end a sentence with a preposition.

I sense that'll happen as well.
