Keep using the word "deplorable". That should help.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
Deplorable's are still angry

Yeah it hasn't worked with my sister. I think she was offended. But she isn't deplorable just because of who she voted for. Having a national figure she can identify with has just made her louder and prouder about what is so deplorable. It makes it harder to sweep under the rug and talk around. Not sure I really want to either.

You're great! Trying to see other people's POV and refraining from casting rash judgement on entire groups of people is a sign of maturity.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

She'll probably always be angry and see conspiracy theories everywhere and go on believing that hateful fat bastard billionaires are our best hope. But then she just likes applauding someone for being as hateful as she is and associating that with being a 'good american'. I appreciate that. She wasn't brought to her beliefs by reason, so she won't be talked out of them by reason -- it's a waste of time to try. I've learned from experience that those kind of people are not interested in facts, and really just want to be annoying and hear their own voice. I'd recommend politely asking her for a mutual agreement not to discuss politics. If she can't do that then you should leave the room when she starts going on a rant. Just because she's you're sister doesn't mean you have to be her soundboard. (March 3, 2017 at 11:14 am)mh.brewer Wrote: Keep using the word "deplorable". That should help. A way to see if she is capable of self moderation is to strictly discuss the effects of the policies she is explicitly or implicitly supporting. Nothing else. She may instinctively ratchet back the rhetoric when separated from the personal nature of politics. Socratic method works as well, but the other person really has to be stable enough to tolerate some potentially sharp questions. Slave to the Patriarchy no more

Meh, what can I say? (March 4, 2017 at 2:13 pm)DarkerEnergy Wrote: Then by all means, refer to all of them as asses. Nothing beats a blanket condemnation. You should stand proud.

Are we nearly done screaming at each other yet? Or do I need to check back in ~6 months or so?
