I'm sure there are believing scholars who doubt the 500. I'm also pretty confident that there are believing scholars who accept the 500. So, scholarship is divided, as it usually is. That's hardly problematic for the believer.

Yeah, that's the point; rarely is belief something that can be falsified, and there are, of course, an infinite number of unfalsifiable beliefs.  By the way, if you didn't get to it, here's part of the New American Bible commentary to 1st Corinthians (emphasis mine):

Quote:Paul’s authorship of 1 Corinthians, apart from a few verses that some regard as later interpolations, has never been seriously questioned. Some scholars have proposed, however, that the letter as we have it contains portions of more than one original Pauline letter. We know that Paul wrote at least two other letters to Corinth (see 1 Cor 5:9; 2 Cor 2:34) in addition to the two that we now have; this theory holds that the additional letters are actually contained within the two canonical ones. Most commentators, however, find 1 Corinthians quite understandable as a single coherent work.

Yes, faiths include unfalsifiable beliefs, and scholars disagree on the Bible. Those are underwhelming points.

It is indeed amazing what most all ministers/preechurs/reverends/pastors are actually taught in churchy school and the amount of it they NEVER use in a sermon lest they upset the pew warmers.

So much of the stuff atheists post here regarding inherent problems with Christian dogma and strictures is in fact well known to pastors, it's when the pew warmers start posting here and have to confront incongruities like Jesus being crucified twice according to scripture that I find it amazing they don't already know.  Think how much bible study is done, how many sermons they listen too, yet coming here and surprise, surprise, Jesus done been nailed up twice and they don't already know it!!   Their pastors know it, they just never put it in a sermon lest the sheeples rise up and torch the church building out of religious outrage, apparently.

Maybe pastors don't teach it because they think it's bullshit.

More likely because they don't want the dolts to stop putting money in the collection plate.  Religion was, is and always will be a lucrative scam... as long as there are enough morons to keep paying for its propagation.

Here's the problems with this statement.

Allegedly there is this god that wants to have a relationship with me. Yet, he created me with a mind that is unable to accept claims without those claims meeting their burden of proof, which include being falsifiable.

It also seems that this god, in his attempt to communicate what is the 'most important message ever', would want to assure that it would be communicated in such a way as not to be opened to interpretation, translation errors, copy errors, contradiction, etc.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Most humans get sold the religions of their parents as kids long before they can form adult critical thinking skills, so while I can agree there are plenty of religious people who deliberately con people, like Hinn, or L Ron Hubbard, I think for the most part most humans dont understand they started out life with a disadvantage.

There are people who know better but don't care, and their are people who genuinely believe what they are selling. I am quite sure many of the atheist here can tell you they would not have considered themselves scammers when they did believe.

Maybe for you, but certainly not for me.  It's why I think that faith = bullshit is a true statement.

I have yet to hear from a theist, how faith (the way the word is used for religious beliefs) differs from gullibility.

Faith is a word people use when they can't justify something.

I wonder how many people would allow a doctor to operate on them if they said "Now, I don't have any degrees posted and I've never operated on anyone before. But you just have to have faith that I know what I'm doing."

Or, you could say, "No, but I stayed in a Holiday Inn last night."
