I can understand how the military was necessary to end WWII, but the fact that people were even stupid enough to allow the war to get that far is probably the only reason the military was needed.

If you're committed to the notion that you cannot, no matter what, support anything the military does, I don't know how you can expect to be included in a reasoned, unbiased discussion about its policies.

I don't see how you can compare the military and religion.  This is only pushing you further out of the conversation in my opinion.  And for the record there have been good things that religions/religious people have done, I just disagree with some of the stuff behind those actions.

It's not a comparison between religion and the military. It's a comparison between ideas.

No, the correct way to look at is you don't support politicians policies over long periods. Now seriously, what do you think would happen if suddenly nobody served? You think magically our enemies would not run over us?

War is hell, and yes it sucks, and our politicians certainly do not always make the right decisions. But no military at all is a bullshit utopia knowing that evolution has produced life that competes for resources. 

I hate that humans fight, I hate war, but yes, I DO want a military, I don't want countries like North Korea or Saudi Arabia over running us. I don't want China or Russia to do that either.

I would be awesome if our species never fought, but we do and that is an unfortunate part of reality. I think the better argument than saying "no military" is advocating for more global diplomacy.

Maybe in the future, the United nations will have an army donated from the forces of all its members.
