I have Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, a condition that severely affects/impacts my musculoskeletal system. All of the damage was done in utero. As a result, I have literal structural deformities, including missing muscle groups (example: I didn't have much in the way of biceps, so the doctors transferred my pectorals to my arms... I have bitchin' parallel scars down my chest like railroad tracks), joint contractures, bone deformities, etc. It's considered a form of Muscular Dystrophy. I've had 43 surgeries, most when I was very young, to give me the mobility I enjoy today.

So, due to my disability, I've heard a bunch of dumb shit, like:

It could be cured by seeing a chiropractor (a guy I used to play an online game with)
It could be cured by changing my diet (a dental hygienist I used to see)
It could be cured by prayer (multiple people)

Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg, but you get the idea.

It sure seemed stupid at the time, I'm sure I rolled my eyes too, but nearly the first thing they tell you in HIV/AIDS/Buddy Hospice training is don't form emotional attachments to the people you are helping.

A physio therapist I was seeing told me to keep playing football after a bad knee injury I got from playing football.

He didn't ask if I actually do play football on a regular basis, plus he's telling me to play a sport notorious for wearing down knees.

A nurse once advised me to go get Christian friends to help stop me smoking weed when I went to go get my heart beats looked at.

Neither of these things are insanely stupid but in the context that the advice was coming from medical professionals I think it adds to the stupidity.

Me: What does it matter to you if some confederate memorials get moved to museums or private property?
Her: You don't care about brown people in Afghanistan or homeless people!
