Well, pandas ARE Chinese and the Chinese are, to some, the biggest upcoming threat to the world.

They're also symbolic of black and white existing in harmony. That's seen as a threat to white supremacists.

They're also fat and gentle, which is a threat to conservative Christians who might see them as representative of Buddha and other Eastern "heathen" religions.
