Apologetics...I'm a BIG Fan
September 11, 2011 at 10:31 pm
I've been doing sort of a self-study on "Christian Apologetics", and I have to say I am impressed. Never before have I been so violently propelled away from the idea of an Invisible Space Wizard so fast as to listen to hours of Christian apologetics spilling cherry-picked scientific truths, and spin them to fit their theological agenda...to those mentally incapable of refuting them.
I'm a science teacher. I "do" science every day. I understand it pretty damn well. Armed with this, I can comfortably say that apologetics scares the shit out of me. Not because it might have a snowball's chance at being true...but because it is so obviously birthed from the realization that Christians cannot "fight" science anymore...so they may as well twist it to suit their needs; much the same way a politician will embrace a formerly rejected idea, when he learns how he can profit from it.
Christian Apologetics is the whoring out of learned scientific principles to fit an unscientific agenda. The only thing more offensive than that, is watching Christians of reasonable intelligence foam at the mouth that they now have "scientific PROOF" for their [G]od...yet they know nothing about science, and their aura of theological appeasement lulls them into being too lazy to find out for themselves or even ask relevant questions.
Sorry if this has been covered at length...I searched...I promise.

I think the most hilarious thing I have ever heard an apologetic say is "..but look at a banana! It's perfectly shaped for a human hand."

Looks like you've only hit the classical ones thusfar. I'm a fan too, for similar reasons.

Ray Comfort, if I recall correctly. Ironically...he zero's in on the shape of a banana...and the human hand...yet casts off the theory of evolution.

Christian apologetics is a prime example of the human race's ability to shoehorn evidence to fit a predetermined conclusion.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

That seems to be a staple of the human race.

Even the smartest of us all cannot escape our subconscious conclusions that are based more on what is pleasing to the emotional aspect of our psyche than reality. We appease our need for purpose by ignoring or misinterpreting evidence. The problem with Christian apologetics is that it brings these ingrained flaws to the forefront of our consciousness and rationalizes it, giving intelligent people the ability to justify the belief that a supernatural entity is not only aware of their existence, but has their best interests at heart.
The human race is so devoid of a sense of significance that it must imagine a deity is carefully observing every aspect of its life to bring about the best possible situation. We need to stop living as if the cosmos was designed specifically for us and create a purpose of our own, but as long as Christian apologetics is around to validate delusion, we will be incapable of such endeavors.
