Decided to make today a stay-at-home-for-a-change day. I've been cycling through reading Guns, Germs and Steel, snacking, and working on the renovations in my study. Managed to get the last small section of dividing wall put in between the study and my office. Doorway's a little bit wider but a heck of a lot stronger than its previous iteration.

I have a little bit of plaster to remove at the tops of a couple of walls, and then I can start on the task that I've been dreading for years: Levelling the ceiling. Levelled the floor a few years ago and due to foundation sag the corner-to-corner difference in the large room was about three inches, so I'm expecting something similar up above. (FWIW, I'm not going to put up a drywall ceiling afterward, but something lightweight and easier to finish.)

Have you considered pierced tin tiles? Lightweight, and you only need furring strips. Just an example- it's a pretty spendy proposition in metal, but there are plastic ones that don't look bad at all.

I like the look of tin, but it wouldn't really suit the vision I have for this room.  When I redid the kitchen I was seriously considering a tin ceiling, but due to the cost I went with a 2x2 suspended ceiling with plain white tiles instead.

I saw something in a coffee shop a few months ago that made me go "Yeah, that's what I want for the study ceiling."  It was plain white slats about 3" wide, kind of like siding or tongue-and-groove pine.

Wondering what fucking planet that is in the s-se sky.

I'd guess it's either Mars or Saturn.  Overcast here, so I can't confirm.
