Actually this is not true.  We had mass shootings before Port Arthur, and even one in Queen St Melbourne about 100 yards from where I worked.  But Port Arthur, combined with a Prime Minister who had the guts to do something about it got enough people on-side, that apart from the NRA, the support for reform what overwhelming. He knew it would cost him seats at the next election, but he stuck with it.

As far as the USA goes, there seems to be enough people, and a big enough lobby group, who accept the cost benefit analysis that mass shootings are a price that they are willing to pay for the right to own pretty but lethal toys.

Or maybe a zombie apocalypse? You can never be too careful I say.

The zombie apocalypse has already happened.

Look at all of the zombies walking around not looking up from their phones...

Apparently, the shooter was a participant in the tournament (Madden 19). He lost, and then opened fire. He was from Baltimore, killed 2, wounded 10-12 more, and then killed himself.

Since we're never going to ban guns in this country (there's an estimated firearm for every adult and child in this country... 300+ million), howabout we address the societal issues like:

The wage gap
Education gap
Healthcare gap
Toxic masculinity
Etc.

An increasing number of people are feeling isolated and threatened, so they turn to violence. Addressing the underlying issues cannot hurt, and will result in a more fair society for all.

I still think $500 per bullet might help.

If they did that, South America would have a new #1 illegal export. The money to be made on black market ammunition would seriously disrupt the drug cartels.

I'm all for licensing. If you want to take your weapon out of your home (or transport it from the gun shop home), you'd best be packing a licence along with your heat.

How about a compromise?

GPS to be fitted on all firearms with a comprehensive database on what it is for and where it can be used. And the GPS will have a “no tamper” feature.

If the tag is tampered with or the weapon is loaded in a place where it shouldn’t be, a permanently orbiting drone will perform an air strike on the person with the weapon.

Sadly, that's what happens when you live in the land of the free.
Someone will use that freedom to kill people because they can. Dunno

No laws will protect anybody from someone who is also intent on taking their own lives.
But lack of availability of weapons that can kill many people quickly can.

If sell more worked, we'd be the safest nation on the planet.

We have the third lowest murder rate in the Americas. Behind Chile and Canada, both countries have fairly lax gun laws as well compared to many places.

The benefit is that it's a wedge issue.  There is no cost to the people who make the calculations.
