My understanding is that Trump was doing some late night tweeting about giving the State of the Union in the house. So that was very much on his mind.
There were six Republican defections during the voting yesterday. One of those defections was Romney who is a potential leader of a Republican coalition against Trump. So with the Dems proved to have greater support in the senate over the shutdown issue than the Republicans, and the Republican defections could have been the beginning of a Republican insurrection.

The Republican senators won't stand for it.
He may try to call a national emergency.
There would be organized resistance (ie TSA mass sick-out) and air traffic controllers would slow down the airports.
It was starting happen, (big air delays) and Trump knew it. He's really not in control of much.
The troops he sent to the boarder sat around and did nothing for weeks ... the "emergency" will be hard to demonstrate.
