Be fair - we don't know what transpired before the physical assault.  Given that Zimmerman had already referred to Martin (during the 911 call) as an 'asshole', I find it very unlikely that he said something like, 'Pardon me, sir.  I'm with Community Watch.  Are you a resident or a visitor here?' and Martin immediately jumped him.
