I once drove an entire year with an expired drivers licence without realizing it. Not an expired licence plate but still. I forgot why I finally noticed. I think it was getting ID'd for beer or something. But damn I was one paranoid SOB until I got my replacement.
Long ago I did get pulled over for an expired tag. Cop let me go as long as I promised to get it renewed quickly,
Don’t they send you notices when it’s time to renew those things?
Boru
Yes, they do. Well in advance of the date. Not to mention most states have a sticker on the windshield with the expiration month and year that's pretty hard to miss.

Plates, no yet. But as I age the slip and falls are inevitable.

Our local DMV was routinely a 2 hour wait BEFORE. c19...
I pull a number - go home, take an hour nap - then go back... That's usually about right...

I renewed my driver's license in 1969. Then again in 1993. Indiana doesn't expire a d/l of an active duty serviceman.

I last renewed my license in person six years ago. Took about 20 minutes.

BMV in Missouri is making appointments. Don't bother otherwise.

State jobs like those at the DMV are notorious for being staffed with people who aren't all that bright and certainly not motivated. In the past, a state job meant low pay but lots of paid holidays and good insurance and retirement benefits. It's almost impossible to get fired from a state gig. And those jobs also don't tend to go away. Moving online would mean they need fewer people.
My brother is a prison guard in the Midwest. He makes okay money now but has nearly 30 years at it. His wife makes the big bucks and my brother stays where he is for the insurance and state retirement package.

A potential brother-in-law was a prison guard in the Midwest*. He got retired when he was a caught selling guns to the inmates.
*Pendleton State Prison Farm, Indiana.
That seems a bit harsh, sacking the guy just for supporting the Second Amendment.

It was the profiteering angle that likely got him fired.
