I read an article that described how Joseph McCarthy had a similar hold on the Republican Party. He spun conspiracy theories, and invoked scapegoats in order to cement his own power. He believed he was going to become the "leader" of the Republican party. He didn't have Trump's level of narcissism, but his methods and personality were similar.
And the Republicans almost gave up the party to him. They were silent during his witch-hunts because they felt it was giving them temporary political advantage, while privately denouncing it. They were also afraid of being targeted themselves. The silence only gave McCarthy more power.
McCarthy only went down because he went after the military. We can hope that Trump goes after a few too many powerful people, and they take him down. Otherwise, he owns the Republicans until he dies.

It's probably not a coincidence that bill barr stuck a knife in his boss's back just before after hours news dumps reported a bribery for pardon scheme that the doj had been investigating -including an unredacted detail about actively monitering 50 electronic devices.
It's the start of his rehabilitation tour as an "institutionalist".
