I suppose they think they're being tested, like Job, and if they just keep the faith long enough, they'll be rewarded.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

Perhaps it's what they have left? To a person with very little, religion means an awful lot.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

There's an inverse correlation between how prosperous a nation is and how religious it is. More prosperous, less religious, and vice versa.

Yeah, I was wondering if people settle on Mars will they make their own version of Christianity there? Maybe it will be like American Christians who invented stories that Jesus was in the US after he resurrected so that we get a sequel to Mormonism in which Jesus, after he left America, went on Mars and lived there for some time.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

When you read the story of Job - doesn't it sound just a bit like Johnny Knoxville and an episode of Jackass going off the rails?

One can just imagine God and Satan rolling on the ground laughing then saying "Now watch THIS!"

Are religious people planning to go to Mars and I missed it?

Islam doesn't have a penalty for masturbation -some scholars don't even forbid it, but they are a minority - or lustfully looking at women, there also doesn't appear to be some formal penalty against lesbians, although lesbian relationships are forbidden. And I think many other religions don't either. So I frankly don't know what you're talking about, maybe it's just your irrational grudge against religion talking.
