What makes someone a Muslim is that they believe in God and that the Quran is the direct word of God. If you’re not religious, you’re not a Muslim.

I know a fair number of Jews. I don’t know any who describe themselves as both atheist and religious.

Wikipedia -- Jewish atheism

That article doesn’t support your point - ‘Jewishness’ is cultural and ethnic as well as religious. ‘Muslim’ describes religious affiliation only.

In other words, someone can be non-religious and still be Jewish. In order to be Muslim, one has to be religious.

Being Muslim has dual meaning. It can mean you're religiously affiliated and/or culturally affiliated.

Most conservative Muslims believe the two cannot be separated, that you must be both religiously and culturally affiliated. They are wrong.

Once upon a time, certainly that was true of Judaism, but, no longer; perhaps Islam can change, or, be changed?

I think a more accurate term than "non-religious muslim" might be "lapsed Muslim." Or maybe a cultural Muslim.

Lapsed implies that the path forsaken is the only correct one.

Something they'd probably agree with, even if we might not.

You do realize this isn’t about denominational schisms, right, J?

Both groups claim that the other are not true Muslims, which is why the more radical elements are killing each other.

True enough, he’s just saying that’s not what the topic is.
