Dalton also bordered on being too good to be bond.

A certain seedy self-indulgence and low rent, in-joke, smarminess is implied in “Ian Fleming’s………”

In this way, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, and Sean Connery were all naturally bad, and being bad, were good Bonds.

(Bold mine)

That’s Moore’s doing. As far as faithfulness to the original stories, Craig is the most Bond-like Bond to date.

I read that Burt Reynolds turned down the role when Connery stepped down.

Good. An American Bond might spell the end of civilization as we know it.

We have Jason Bourne, who is cooler anyway.

On topic: a longish discussion about the Weimar Republic, but well worth the watch; there's some parallels to the American political situation today.

in my opinion the social conditions of its antecedent the Wilhelmine empire, and the unusual political and economic condition created defeat in WWI, makes the weimar republic a poor parallel to US now.  The decline and fall of the Roman republic from the third punic war to the battle of actium in my opinion reveal a more probable trajectory of the american republic.

Another good equivalence might be The Wizard of Oz: tiny people paying homage to a confidence trickster of a leader who is not what he seems, a witch who has her slave monkeys resort to violence to get what she wants, and an over-valued mansion.

It all comes to an end with the realization that it was nothing but a horrible dream.

Quote:The Supreme Court refused to reinstate Alabama’s Republican-drawn congressional map, enabling a court-appointed official to draw the lines for the 2024 election instead.

The justices in June struck down Alabama’s previous map for likely diluting the power of Black voters, and the current dispute concerned a new version that still did not add a second majority-Black district.

Alabama had urged the justices to temporarily halt a lower ruling that blocked that new map for not following the Supreme Court’s directive.

In a brief order, the high court denied the state’s request, handing a significant victory for voting rights advocates and a group of Black Alabama voters who had sued over the design. There were no noted dissents.

The ruling could also provide a boost to Democrats in their quest to retake the House next year. Rather than using the Republican-drawn lines for the 2024 election cycle, the order paves the way for an independent expert appointed by a panel of federal judges to design the boundaries instead.

That court-appointed expert is set to submit the final map in the coming days.

Trump Found Liable For Fraud

Quote:A New York judge has found Donald Trump and his adult sons liable for fraud, saying the Trumps provided false financial statements for roughly a decade.

Quote:In the order, the judge rejected Trump’s deposition testimony in which the former president said that the financial statements were not fraudulent because they contained disclaimers. Trump said the statements contained a “worthless clause” in them warning lenders and others that they shouldn’t be relied on.

Tuesday, the judge said that “the defendants’ reliance on these ‘worthless’ disclaimers is worthless.”

Impact on the election - a lot? Some? None at all? I expect it’ll move at least some of the undecided into Biden’s column.

It may.

However, there are the Republicans that are going to vote GOP regardless.  Trump could do just about anything...on camera...and it wouldn't matter.

Then there are the ones who won't admit they were maybe wrong...they have to hold their ground because they can't back pedal.
