My mom and I went for dinner tonight at a local bistro, which had a music-video channel playing. Some shit Phil Collins song came on, and a couple of tables over a loud discussion arose over the "value" of his music. I stood up, pointed to my Black Sabbath T-shirt (same one I'm wearing in my avatar), and said loudly "I bet you can guess what I think of this music." Got a good laugh. Kate Bush, Phil Collins, Celine Dion ... it's all oatmeal. I like jalapeños. There's a whole bunch of bands I'd love to see loaded onto an Airbus A380 -- yes, I'll need a plane that big -- suffering severe metal fatigue in the left main wing spar. Bill Cobbs, 90. What a coincidence, for the last two days I remembered his character remark in the TV show "I'll Fly Away" to his daughter how her ex boyfriend would have 1 to 10 countdown before he farted, and then in the show 6 ft Under, Bill played a guy who kept farting.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

What I don't like is lowest-common-denominator music that presents nothing challenging or thoughtful. A lot of people in the 80s thought Bon Jovi was "metal". I disagreed -- it was run-of-the-mill pop with loud guitars. And plenty of what is considered "real" metal is still crap in my eyes, or ears. I listen to most genres of music regularly. But I refuse to listen to oatmeal. I listen for musicality, no matter the genre. My favorite bands are bands that do not stick to one groove and milk it. I love both these takes on a great song: Both are metal as fuck, although they have entirely different vibes. |
