I stood up, pointed to my Black Sabbath T-shirt (same one I'm wearing in my avatar), and said loudly "I bet you can guess what I think of this music."

Kate Bush, Phil Collins, Celine Dion ... it's all oatmeal. I like jalapeños.

That’s the whole gist of the nub it’s ok to like oatmeal, and it’s ok to like jalapeños. These things are just personal preferences.

Except for Abba. It’s NEVER ok to like Abba.

I love a lot of stuff outside metal. What I don't like is lowest-common-denominator music that presents nothing challenging or thoughtful. A lot of people in the 80s thought Bon Jovi was "metal". I disagreed -- it was run-of-the-mill pop with loud guitars. And plenty of what is considered "real" metal is still crap in my eyes, or ears.

I listen to most genres of music regularly. But I refuse to listen to oatmeal. I listen for musicality, no matter the genre. My favorite bands are bands that do not stick to one groove and milk it.

Both are metal as fuck, although they have entirely different vibes.
