You know tariffs are going to be bad for the US when Belacqua is cheering for them. Indeed, they will alienate the allies and the dollar won't be the world's currency anymore, and the prices in the US will skyrocket.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

To somebody like me who knows very little about economics, Trump's tariffs, etc., seem random and chaotic. But this writer sees them as a considered plan. The plan will harm US allies and, of course, not-rich people in the US, but there is method in the madness.
It’s a six trillion-with-a-t tax increase and it won’t work.
The author draws a lot of comparisons to the Nixon Shock, but doesn’t seem put off by the fact that Nixon, in addition to (a comparatively mild) 10% tariff also froze wages and prices. Nixon’s scheme turned out to be inflationary, depreciated the US dollar, and was abandoned after just four months.

Bel is so smitten with a man who has, in the last three months, signed orders to effectively screw up everything and everyone, played golf where he manages to always win the tournaments at his own golf courses, rage Tweets or rage Xes - not sure what to call it, and threatens to take over countries he has no right to...all while stroking Putin on the regular.
Just when I thought Bel couldn't be more of a disgusting person, he surprises me yet again.

And I had hoped to retire someday. These rich fuckers are robbing us in plain sight.
Everything will be more expensive. Our meager investments are being sacrificed to fund a moron's zero sum worldview.
Trade has always been a good thing. It works best when both sides win. Don't talk to me about deficits. That was the old times. We're on our way to more expensive crap products and a crashed market ripe for the billionaire bros to gobble up on the cheap.
The looting of the USA. This is what Putin did to consolidate power. We're back in Napoleonic times.

Yes, as Varoufakis points out in the article I linked to, Trump's plan will help the rich, but hurt America's allies and most Americans.
He says that the Nixon plan was intended to maintain US economic hegemony even though America became a debtor nation. This was accomplished through financialization and globalization of the economy -- two changes which undoubtedly harmed quality of life for regular Americans. Trump's plan is something similar.
It should be no surprise that Trump works to help people like himself, and doesn't care about the rest of us.
Unfortunately I don't know of any way to work against these changes, or Trump's harmful intentions.

A conjecture that seems to square with Trump's cited "reciprocal" tariffs is that the administration is taking the trade deficit with that country and dividing it by the total amount of imports from that country, and citing that as the "tariff" and trade barriers that the country is applying to U.S. imports. They then divide that percentage by two in order to arrive at their so-called reciprocal tariff. If that is what they are indeed doing, then that is totes batshit.
