Good luck with that keeping on, then.

Sort of like Fireball said, becoming a cardinal takes time and a LOT of moving through the politics of the Church just so you can end up on the Vatican’s radar.

I understand why they skew old. I'm just pointing out that @Mr Greene's wish for the Church to grow into modern times seems less likely for the demographics you mentioned.

We have one already. The great and venerated Pope AhlDenti XVII

It was @BrianSoddingBoru4 who was wishing for "not a geezer".
Of the candidates I've seen 'progressive' seems to translate as "not wanting to criminalise same sex relationships" and goes downhill from there...

Got to love the reporting on this one;
Quote:With 80% of the cardinals appointed by Pope Francis himself, they are not only electing a pope for the first time, but will offer a broad global perspective.
For the first time in history, fewer than half of those given a vote will be European.
And although the college may be dominated by his appointments, they were not exclusively "progressive" or "traditionalist".

The legalisation of same-sex marriage around the world, calling a landmark 2015 vote in favour in the Republic of Ireland "a defeat for humanity". -Cardinal Parolin

He has opposed abortion rights, calling them "a form of murder" -Cardinal Tagle

"unions of persons of the same sex are considered contradictory to cultural norms and intrinsically evil". -Cardinal Ambongo

"homosexuality should not be treated as an offence." -Cardinal Turkson

But the Conclave isn’t required to choose the next pontiff from among its members. They aren’t even required to choose any cardinal, or even a priest - they always do, but there’s nothing which says they have to. For example, Aaron Taylor-Johnson meets all the requirements.

If they’d drop the ‘must be male’ requirement, we’d have shot at Pope Saoirse Ronan.

Right, but I was referring to your critique for their outdated doctrine ("are they still trying to make medievalism great again?"), admittedly correlating conservative views with chronological age,

More "homosexuality should not be treated as an offence." is labelled as 'Progressive'... Seriously what part of this isn't medieval? And they wonder why the church is as dead as a doornail...

Why is a pope actually needed?
We don't have one right now and everything seems to be working just fine!

You seem to think I'm blind to, or perhaps even support, their bigoted parochialism. I'm not and I don't.
