Actually no. They don't have the right to stop that business from locating in their city. Boston's mayor, Tom Menino is backing off his threat to ban Chick-fil-A from entering the city. He said that would be an infringement on their rights. The same case holds true for the Alderman in Chicago who at first threatened to ban Chick-fil-A from entering there as well. No public official has the right to abuse his position in office to threaten or bully someone because that person's opinions differs from theirs.....

And yet Chick-fil-A have a right to abuse their position by forcing their religious and political positions on their customers.
This seems right to you, does it?
Because as someone who studied applied business I can tell you this qualifies as extremely unethical.

Quote:Australia is more politically enlightened than England?

I didn't say or imply that, but seeing as you mention it,yes, almost since the beginning of white settlement.

For a start,Australian society has never had a class system based on inheritance, and no aristocracy.

Australia (my state,South Australia) was the first place on earth to grant women full franchise. IE the right to vote AND to stand for parliament

You are welcome to immigrate here,as long as you have some skills and have the sense to NEVER criticise Australia to an Aussie. We take exception, and some people will actually hit you.(the second condition is the important one)Tiger

As far as the corporate cocksuckers are concerned ethics does not exist.

Well unfortunately Chick-Fil-A does have a right to open a business, unless they can find loopholes in the laws to find a way to block it (which has happened in similar cases. For example the use of zoning laws). Eh, people should just stop going to the place if they don't like it, and shouldn't give people like Dan Cathy any airtime. You've got a right to free speech in this country, but you haven't got a right to an audience.

Nope, that's why you have a constitution, just because 51% of people wan't something, doesn't mean they should get it, you have rights that cannot be taken away regardless of what the majority wants. The majority in the south wants/wanted tones of stuff, fuck em, they can't.

Quote:A good businessman never uses his business as a platform to push forward a political or religious agenda and nor should he. The role of a business is supply and demand, nothing more and nothing less. Anything more isolates segments of the market, alienates customers and makes the business a target to opposing political or religious agendas. It puts the entire business at risk through a practise that is neither practical or ethical.

Does anyone here disagree with this statement?

I do. Look at the south, I daresay it's a good strategy for down there at the moment, and a terrible strategy for up north. Also, the politicians wielding the power as they do (picking winners, banning companies from the city as some propose) means that companies involving themselves in politics is inevitable. At the moment I'd say its bad business planning to NOT involve yourself with politicians at some level.

Quote: And you're right to do that but you wouldn't rave about your political standing through your business and expect it not to effect you negatively would you?

Thats my point. The moment you use your business as a platform for a religious or political statement then you are subjecting your customers and potential customers to bias.
This is what Chick-fil-A did. The second they subjected their market to this bias they lost the right to not be subjected to the same in return.
A business must be politically and religiously neutral to be both ethical and successful.
Soooo.... A Theist, Clive, Lion... you lose. Deal with it. :-)

They subjected the market to their bias you say? Right, ok, so let the market subject them to bias right back. Getting a politician to ban a business from a city is not market forces at work, as someone else said, if the people of that city really don't want that business there, it will fold in a few months.

Who wan't mayors to be able to ban business?
For every mayor that bans chick-fil-a, you'll get a fuckwit mayor who bans gay-rights supporting business. Why let mayors ban businesses at all? It's a recipe for disaster.

Of course, you are completely wrong. See my example above regarding head shops, strip clubs, bars & package stores. If a municipality or county votes to disallow a them a business license, for whatever reason they deem fit, then they are effectively barred from operating in that area.

If a municipality as a whole sees donating to hate groups as morally or ethically wrong & something they don't want to support, then they are well within their rights to disallow a business license to a company that does just that. Period, full stop, end of.

If you think I am incorrect, feel free to try to get a liquor license in a dry county. Be sure to let us know how far you get.

Round here these all seem to sell crystals and budhas with a side line in drug paraphanalia.

So they are "new age shops"

Some of them. The one closest to me is a salvage shop that sells pipes & bongs & such. The next closest sells about 50/50 paraphernalia / porn & sex toys.

Not very new agey Big Grin
