As to your bigger question, I really don't see what the problem is. And I say that as an anti-theist. It's a book of mythology mixed (loosely) with fact, of questionable historical integrity. Like many other novels. Unless you're being expected to believe it, or adhere to it, treat it the same as an exercise to read The Iliad.

You should do as I instructed my youth group when they asked me about studying evolution. I told them to read and study evolution and answer the test questions, I told them to get the best possible test scores and then write at the end of their test sheets that they did not believe in evolution. This shows they have respect for the teacher and the system even though they do not agree with either, they had no problems I'm assuming, because they never said anything further. If they would have had a problem they would have told me, they were just that kind of people.

One of my youth took quantum mechanics to fill so time, he obtained his PHD 2 years quicker than required, is now an outstanding nuclear engineer for the Y12 plant in Oakridge and travels the world helping others in this field. I asked him to study well, didn't want him blowing up the world you know. Four of my youth were valedictorians.

And, do they still deny the truth of evolution? If so, they are seriously flawed scientists... whatever field they are in.
