Atheists; what do you base your morals on?

"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Nah, he just went home.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I knew there was a word for people like me. I just didn't know what it was. Is it fair to say that we've wandered off the question of where atheists get their morals and onto a demonstration that knowing God is no guarantee of them either? ![]() RE: Atheists; what do you base your morals on?

Contrary to popular belief, man, not god, developed moral reasoning.
Don't think so? Then explain why moral reason has, like man, evolved? 200 years ago, the majority of the world (even the "godly religious" people) felt slavery was acceptable and not morally objectionable. Now, the opposite is true. And that argument has literally thousands and thousands of other references. A person's morals are based on a combination of elements: Upbringing, the influence of society, social standards, personal preferences, etc. Has religion influenced morals? Yes and no. As I said, neither god, nor religion, are the orgin of morals, one way or the other. But religion has promoted, perpetuated, and even inforced moral standards both good and bad. Ultimately, it's up to the individual to carefully examine all of the information available and decide what is truly right and wrong. Unfortunately, the vast majority of individuals do not choose to examine all of the information. And religion, more than any other force, influences such neglect and ignorance. On myself, the way I want to be treated as an individual sharing this pile of dirt. Then I aim to treat everyone in the same manner.
