The fact that every internet quote site has him sourced as the author is enough for me. Otherwise, would it not be unknown or anonymous?
Which abets jstrodel's claim that your scholarship sucks. A question such as this can only be satisfactorily resolved by an appeal to the primary literature. All you've done is prove him correct.

By all means, find the primary literature.

According to this source, it is Gibbon who may have plagiarized it from Seneca or Lucretius:

Since this doesn't give a source for the quote in Seneca, it doesn't help you [1]. You're only digging the hole deeper.
[1] You'll note that the author of this page comments that, "I find quotes in red questionable. If you know where they come from, please tell me," and the citation to Seneca is indeed in red. If this is what you consider scholarship, I think jstrodel may have been right about you.

Okay, so as listed in the link you provided was a site that lists all of his works. First of all, I will state that just from skimming most of his works in relation to religion, it is easy to understand why Seneca is widely accepted as having authored that quote despite there being no documented source to prove it. His writing greatly alludes to his authorship to that quote.
This site was actually listed in your Wikiquote link. If one is going to regard true sources, anything Wiki related is not considered an acceptable source by colleges. And for good reason. Also, I highly doubt any respectable author or journalist would dare to source Wiki.
However, even that Wiki page you linked did have this to state:
It's difficult to "prove a negative" and declare with certainty that Seneca never wrote these words.

Did we just spend several pages arguing about how many scholarly books one needs to read in order to defend the Bible? Is there an over/under, to make it easier? Like, is 3500 pages enough? Is there a multiplier based on how many of the authors have PhDs, or how many articles they've had published? A "top scholar" would be like a 2.05 multiplier, Richard Dawkins would be a -1.999... and so on? How many of the "millions and millions" of books in a seminary must I read to cut through all of the mystery surrounding Christianity?
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I think it's important to reiterate one of Rhythm's points, because jstrodel seems to have glossed over it. One need not read an atheist book on religion(Only read "God is not Great" personally, and it was entertaining but nothing I would base my objections on) to reaffirm their beliefs that it's all nonsense. All one has to do for that is pay attention to the words out of the mouths of believers..
The day I study Christianity seriously is the day it passes the smell test, and believers themselves do more to cause a foul stench to emanate from it than atheists could ever hope to.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
