Almost as though they didn't know what he looked like, really.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

On the other hand there are multiple attestations to Hannibal's life and works, though I personally am not familiar enough with the man to comment. Letters from other historical figures, writings of his own perhaps. Things which, if they existed for the JC character, would be paraded as first-resort proof. There's a reason why belief in the character is wholly reliant on faith.
