Does god give you a cookie every time you say this to a heathen?

No, when I hear people joke about Hell, I makes me very sad.

That would explain why you stopped to remind us about it. Y'know, due to sadness.

So to brighten up your melancholy you're compelled to sling fire and brimstone at those you were offended by? Fuck me, now that's sad...

That's funny. I feel the same way when people talk about Hell as if it's a real place.

B:that you have correctly interpreted the rather confusing and largely allegorical revelation in the bible.
I asked a question in another thread about how certain people were that God didn't exist. Expressed, say, as a percentage, how certain are you about your interpretation of the lake of fire?
I'm about 5%. I've formed an idea but it's immensely tenuous, and certainly not firm enough to offer to other people!

It depends on which version you read. The concept of hell has changed considerably over time. I've read passages that state that it is the fires which are eternal, not the punishment. Some texts imply that the punishment us the destruction of the soul. The case could be made that whichever of us is right about the truth of christianity, I get oblivion. So either way, I still win :p

Given the time elapsed since it was written, that's getting tricky. Gonna be standing room only, and that's not my idea of a fun eternity! And the Lake of fire is just plain silly.
I think oblivion is probably about right. As to heaven, the phrase most often used by Jesus is eternal life. Eternal does not mean for all time, it means outside of time. I can't conceive of what existence would be like outside of time so no idea what that would look like either.
So no idea where anyone is going. If anywhere. Sorry. Shit Christian if I don't even know that!

Honest Christian?
Good on you for being honest with your self and us. I like your conception of eternity as being outside of time. Maybe you have experienced some heaven already .. moments of timeless elation? We've probably all known protracted moments of unbearable hell too. Maybe reward, punishment or karma really is instant and unrelated to 'after life'? Always knew there were thoughtful interpretations of Christianity out there.
