For that matter, where's the evidence to think consciousness can stick around after the body generating it degenerates? Save your NDE's for the gullible. The degree of bodily degeneration involved in a near death experience is no reason to think consciousness can persist in a moldering corpse.

Being alive means that exist a parallelism among body, mind and consciousness.
Once the parallelism is lost due to body death then the factors separate.
This happen in nature all the time.

There is no evidence of consciousness without a brain.

All evidence from neuroscience indicates that consciousness/mind is brain-based.

Being alive means having all your vital organs functioning, especially the brain. Being dead means having all your vital activities cease, including brain functions. As far as we can tell, your consciousness dies with your brain.

They don't "separate," they all dissipate at once.

Sorry guys but the evidence point elsewhere.
Let me give you just two examples.
1) One Nde while outside his body (in one hospital) saw one nurse in a different section of the hospital dropping a baby which caused a fracture.
Once back in his body he reported what he saw to the doctors so they could fix the baby fracture.
Note that the nurse did not report the incident for fear to get into trouble.
2) One NDE while out his body saw what was inside an adjacent room that he never been in his life and once back in his body described the contents to the nurses that could check and witness the event.
These events and many other have been witnessed time and time again and many witness are still alive ready to describe the events.
On the other hand you got absolutely nothing to prove the opposite.

Oh man, anecdotes probably made up entirely by a clearly superstitious idiot on the internet. Guess I'll just turn in my atheist badge downtown. Later, guys.

In the spirit (ahem) of checking the events, rico, could you give a few specific details by which we could research these anecdotes? Names, dates, that sort of thing?

You can call them anecdotes or whatever you like but according the big book of Near-Death Experiences these facts are real and documented by witness with references.
Go and read the book, contact the witness and then come back here.
