When an African American uses the word 'nigger', it doesn't carry the connotation that 'people of your race were slaves to people of my race'. Used among African Americans, saying 'nigger' defies the idea that one person can be superior to another because of race, used among European Americans, saying 'nigger' reinforces that idea.

Anyway, as some people have already pointed out, it´s the intent behind using a word that is the most important. If someone I know takes offense with me using a specific word and asks me to stop, I would of course stop using it. At least when he/she is around.

It´s another thing entirely to try and forbid me from using it. That´s called censorship and has no place in any modern society.

Respect for others has always had a place in all societies, respect is a word less popular than the N word, when we lose respect for others, regardless of speech freedoms, we are driving our society to a lower level, a level we really do not want to reach.

The slave trade of Europe and America was aided by the slave trade of the Africans themselves, they were practicing this before America was discovered. How many black people do you think know this? Do you believe they would approve of this?

Actually plenty of black people know this, it's one of the reasons for contentions between native African-Americans and African immigrants. There still quite a lot of resentment.

African immigrants are not responsible for their ancestors selling your ancestors. None of us are responsible for our ancestors or the actions of our governments before we were of voting age and certainly should not be penalised thereof. This eternal whining about events of 200 years ago is getting extremely boring.

Given that being 'black' is the USA is more about cultural identity than anything else given their use of the absurd 'one drop rule' (which makes me black btw) better to dump the whole notion of racial division.

Personally I think anybody who uses filthy words that are of designation to offend like race slurs and profenity should be publicly find.
