All Hail the Second Amendment

The gun nut mentality would be amusing.... if it weren't so deadly.

It's laudable that you wish to protect children. Considering that accidental deaths:
"Among children: motor vehicles (34%), suffocation (27%), drowning (17%), fires (7%), environmental factors (2.3%), poisoning (2.2%), falls (1.5%), firearm (1.5%), pedal cycles (1.4%), and medical mistakes (1.3%)."
When will you be starting your thread on plastic bags or swimming pools?

No, because those things have other uses than killing people.

Surely, you can see that?

Meanwhile, a modest breath of sanity from the Supreme Court.

My guns have other uses than killing people. I have had guns all my life and never killed anyone. I have killed a lot of paper and steel targets though.

I didn't buy my guns with the intent to kill anyone. I bought them to use for sporting purposes and to save my life if need be.

I dare say that I am more appalled by the terrible things done by some people as pointed out in your many links but to blame the second ammendment for it is plain dumb.

Your thread should have been "All hail stupid people". It didn't though because you are an extreme leftist that hates the thought of someone owning a gun regardless of the reason.

And guns have other uses than killing people. Min, you are normally rational, but not on this issue.

The Court is treating this carefully and sensibly. From that same article:
Quote:The Second Amendment does require that the states permit some form of carry for self-defense outside the home," the panel said. "States may not destroy the right to bear arms in public under the guise of regulating it.

I suppose they would make a fairly ersatz-hammer, Chas.

Meanwhile.....

I suppose he could have done this with a plastic bag....

Reason tells me that no matter how drunk he was he would have gotten the bag off his head before suffocating.

What an idiot. One of the most important laws of gun safety is to always treat a gun as if it was loaded. He broke this not once, but three times in a row.

An idiot isn't long for this world. I wouldn't trust him with a plastic bag either.

If he is an example for why guns should be banned then we'd have to ban half the objects in all of our homes.

Gun control is too emotionally charged to have a rational discussion with most participants. Invariably you get the types who are absolutely terrified of guns, despite a lack of experience with them.

They believe the only reason anyone would want a gun is to go around killing people, and nothing you say will convince them otherwise.

In my (very limited) experience, this is a common failing around guns. The lack of experience mixed with the "can't happen to me" attitude makes people frighteningly irresponsible.

When we were in Ohio back in October, we were staying at a friend's home. He had some BB guns that his son and my friend's son enjoyed using for target shooting. I did some target shooting myself with them (first time EVAR) and enjoyed it, and I was also very conscious about where I was pointing the guns and not putting a finger on the trigger until I was ready to fire. My friend, though, had the dual bad habit of 1)waving the guns around with no care whatsoever and 2)getting aggravated when we admonished him to be careful. He insisted that he was NOT handling the guns improperly, even as he waved them around while talking.

BB guns are not toys, they're perfectly capable of causing serious injury and even death. I enjoyed the target shooting and would not mind doing it again --even with real guns and live ammo, which I bet would be awesome-- but I wouldn't feel safe around the combination of my friend and guns, because he (an otherwise sensible and cautious person) simply doesn't seem to recognize how dangerous he is with a gun in his hands.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
