Come on all you happy atheists sound off.
Any depression that I feel from time to time is not a product of my atheism. I am currently not depressed.

The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

I refuse to be depressed. Life is too short for it. I have plenty of things that tempt me to be depressed but I reject it.
I wonder if there's some sort of correlation with intelligence and depression? *Googles* Maybe. There are some corollaries that are interesting. People with higher than average intelligence are more likely to be night owls (this forum: yup.) And people who are night owls are 5 times more likely to suffer from depression.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

The only significant bout of depression I can recall was one I went through when my father died. After his funeral (where I tried to thropple the priest) I went on a rather serious bender involving heavy drinking and random acts of violence and vandalism. This lasted several days, so they tell me.
When my mates caught up with me, they had me arrested, committed, etc. Long story short, I was given a course of meds and talk therapy. It helped. A lot. Since then, I get nothing more than moody spells (typical bad day-ism) that rarely last more than an hour. So no - I don't think I'm depressed. Boru

I've been clinically depressed as long as I can remember. Its just a chemical thing--my body can't metabolize folic acid. My physical malady didnt change when I deconverted but I no longer fear things so crazily as I did or beat myself up like believers do or live life like there's no tomorrow. My workload has decreased pretty much. My entire life outlook has changed, and that has been a very freeing and happy experience. I can't help what my body does, although for the first time in ever I feel like its improving. mainly because I've submitted myself to medical care over spiritual care IMO.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite. Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment. Quote:Some people deserve hell. I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong. ![]() |
