I once heard something about the native English speakers learning a new language... I think it was Rory Sutherland:

You could start with spanish... we can understand it, for the most part, as long as you speak slowly...
When the Spaniards go into full arabic mode, then forget-about-it! It's impossible to keep up.

I read through this thread, and there was not one page of moral pontificating from a theist.

Nearly 8 pages so far.

Well I didn't speak a word of Greek till I moved here aged 27. Now I can get by with no problems - although again almost everyone here speaks English. Most people think I am Greek American when I do speak to them. There's an accent I cannot overcome but my Greek is still generally received well.
