I swear I used to be the only white person where I lived. Most people spoke Spanish, which I can now speak pretty fluently. But I had some friends that spoke Portuguese and/or a weird mixture of Portuguese and Spanish. I can pick up on a conversation.

Well I didn't speak a word of Greek till I moved here aged 27. Now I can get by with no problems - although again almost everyone here speaks English. Most people think I am Greek American when I do speak to them. There's an accent I cannot overcome but my Greek is still generally received well.
