Assault rifles into stores? I see no assault rifles. I see expensive black plastic toys not all that much unlike dildos fobbed off on peckerwoods with a complex.

When I was in school, there were guns but there were no school shootings.

That just isn't true, the first high school shooting recorded was in the 18th century and they've been a pretty regular occurrence in the US ever since.

Fine - I should have said "hardly any". But regular occurrence? The rate is increasing dramatically.
But it's not about the guns. It's about the crazy.

One thing that has changed is the news itself. Now you get these frantic coverage sprees where the entire country is fed the same slop for an entire day or two....or until the next "event." A lot of these seem to have a splashy suicide as an end game.
It's a very good question, though. Another thing is the de-institutionalization of the mentally ill. That's a biggie.

I agree that it isn't just black and white, but the fact is the US has had school shootings since they've had guns, which is, in terms of US history, forever.

We need to look at the rate at which these are happening.
I thought to check Wikipedia for stats. While it demonstrates that the rate is increasing, it also lists shootings that aren't actually 'school shootings'.

Yes, it's not black and white. But where will effort yield the most results?
It's mostly not about the guns, it's almost entirely about the crazy.
And the crazy is about a society that does not pay attention to or take care of those most in need.
