People didn't think the sound barrier could be broken.

We have only scratched the surface of science. We don't even know what dark energy or dark matter is. It is way to early to say that humans won't discover ways to jump from galaxy to galaxy.

Even at light speed other solar systems are really fucking far away though. I really do hope some smart ass figure it out but I don't know, these are some huge distances.

If by 'be like Star Trek', you mean warp drive and matter/energy transport and a galactic Federation working for peace and harmony, then no.
