I mean, you watch the news polaris..you've seen what we (as in the state) do when we think that no eyes are upon us, eh? IMO, shit probably ought to be on PBS. At least then we'd have a very specific idea of what we're talking about when we say we're for it or against it. You want me to hit somebody over the head with a brick? Fine, but you have to watch me do it.

I think it should be up to the family if there is any to choose to watch the execution or not. As for the method, the most painless, less degrading and more humane should be used. We could say a bullet to the head is humane and painless, but human rights organizations would consider it degrading to human dignity since it's not a pretty image, it's how they execute people in China. I also think the convict should be able to spend a few hours with his family before the execution. Not that I care about this much, in europe the death penalty has been abolished and the EU forbids it, the ECHR also forbid it definitely for member states. As for life in jail, I think it could be a viable option.

Morphine overdose could be good too, I believe. I am for the death penalty in extreme cases. Not just someone killed someone else, so kill him too. I mean someone skinned women and used their skins to decorate his house. Or she tortured a teenager to death because the girl flirted with boys. The real sickos.

Quote:Republican Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill into law Thursday allowing the state to electrocute death row inmates in the event prisons are unable to obtain the drugs, which have become more and more scarce following a European-led boycott of drug sales for executions.

Tennessee is the first state to enact a law to reintroduce the electric chair without giving prisoners an option, said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization that opposes executions and tracks the issue.

I disagree with the death penalty in the first place, it's my opinion that lex talionis solves nothing, but this is just... sickening.

Opinions?

The statistics paint a curious picture. It would seem that the murder rate is lower in states where there is no death penalty.

Death Penalty Statistics

I don't know how these stats stack up, if there is a couple of states that pull the others up or down accordingly, but it does seem that the death penalty is not a deterrent. Which, if correct, would mean that the death penalty is purely penal from a state point of view and serves as state-sponsored retribution from an individual point of view.

Do the families of people executed wrongly get state-sponsored retribution? No, they don't, and what happens to the families of victims in cases where people are wrongly executed, now there are two unlawful deaths and the real criminal is still at large. It's just not a fair system and the means do not seem to me to justify the ends.

RE: Death Penalty
The death penalty only fulfills special prevention by making sure 100% the individual doesn't commit crimes. General prevention is not achieved and retribution only sometimes. but even retribution is not supposed to be an eye for an eye. All sentences have a retribution part, you just got to balance it with the other two objectives/purposes of criminal law. A sentence merely based on retribution is not a mean to protect society, but merely a finality to accomplish revenge

It's not the State's responsibility to become the Grim Reaper because they've judged someone to be unworthy of life. No to mention the exorbitant costs of appeals while keeping someone on death row, along with the fact that courts can make mistakes, and while exonerating someone after they've served part of a sentence isn't ideal, the one penalty you can't reverse or fix is the death penalty.

It is the State's responsibility to protect the people, and while rehabilitation is great, and should be Plan a with everyone, some people can't be rehabilitated. The fact that courts make mistakes doesn't completely invalidate the death penalty. Neither does the idea that executing people doesn't prevent others from committing murder.

it's ineffective at deterring murder, it's immoral, and it's expensive as hell. I'd prefer to see it gone.

RE: Death Penalty
Its immorality is debatable, obviously, and it doesn't need to be as expensive as it is. It deters the individuals from committing other crimes in a better way than locking them up and hoping they don't break out or corrupt anyone else. Sociopaths are said to be charismatic, after all.

That explains a lot of questions I had about Hollywood.

How about locking them up and putting them to work (not slavery, but rational ethical work) to pay for debts? It costs less and brings greater advantages.
