Changes to DNA are random, but survival is not. And differential survival and reproduction is what makes the process non-random.
Only the genotypes that result in successful phenotypes stays in the game for long.

That's probably the core of it, these folks think that the choice is either "god" or "random". Anything between the two positions (if they can be said to be opposites...which they can't - but fuck it) is entirely lost on them.
